The Art of Perception

The Skill of Self Confidence: Dr. Ivan Joseph at TEDxRyersonU

Dr. Ivan Joseph brought up some valid points pertaining to the power of self confidence. Confidence can almost be seen in a narcissistic light in today's society. People who are constantly happy or believe that they CAN achieve things can be a bit overwhelming to some. But I would argue the contrary. Confidence is so attractive. It's all about the art of perception. The one who looks at the positive rather than the negative. The one who looks at their imperfections and sees perfections. The ability to believe in ones self worth.

Recently, along with the Ted talk, I watched a 60 minutes interview
with Anderson Cooper and the infamous Lady Gaga. Anderson Cooper starts off the
interview with an introduction of Lady Gaga stating, “ is she a real artist, or
a marketing expert? Musically gifted, or a flash in a pan? We weren’t sure what
to expect”. Right off the bat we see the confusion society has with Lady Gaga
and omnipresent critique that lies with her name.  Everyone taking different stances on the
infamous “Lady Gaga” leaves everyone in a flurry. Lady Gaga states:

"Everyone wants to see the decay of the
superstar. They want to see me fail, they want to see me fall on stage, and
they want to see me vomiting outside the nightclub. Isn’t that the age we live
in? People who have it all, lose it all?"

Gaga brings up a valid point. Society is always looking for the “offense” or the flaws of the artist instead of merely looking at the art of the music. Art comes in
all categories, its not meant to please everyone. Like art, every individual is different.Individualism enables one to express
oneself.Lady Gaga use of music and art to express herself is what makes her so refreshing.
 That is the beauty of
art. It invokes thought, beliefs and change. Her confidence and belief in self worth is what makes her the powerful artist she is known to be.

What I am trying to get across is that there is always going to be that person who wants to bring you down, that "imperfection", and that omnipresent "i can't" in the back of your mind. But if you learn confidence and self worth, the only person who can stop you is YOU. There is something unprecedented and powerful to CONFIDENCE. Be you.
